Fire-fighting pumps: what they are

Fire-fighting pumps are mechanical devices consisting of a water pump coupled to an electric motor or an endothermic engine. They are used to move a certain amount of water at a pressure that can extinguish a fire, according to project data. They are used in case of emergency and must be installed in most of the industrial activities, receptive tourist hotels, … They intervene automatically for the extinction of fires. Their water flow and relative pressure depend on the type / size of the fire-fighting water network (sprinklers or hydrants). This type of pumps can also be used in foam fire extinguishing systems, which use premixers and monitors.

Types of pumps and use

The most used horizontal-axis fire-fighting pumps are the “end-suction” type, the only vertical-axis pumps allowed are the “vertical turbine pumps”. The use of submerged type main pumps is to be limited.

The fire protection standard UNI EN 12845

All Fourgroup fire-fighting pumps are designed and manufactured according to the UNI EN 12845 standard. This standard describes the characteristics and requirements for the design, installation and maintenance of sprinkler systems in buildings and industries, as well as the type of specific pumps for shutdown. The pumps must be driven by diesel or electric motors. The diesel engine must be direct-initiated, water-cooled or air-cooled and must be able to operate at full load and continuously; it must also be equipped with a tank that ensures operation and good autonomy, based on the risk class of the plants. The Fourgroup fire-fighting systems are designed and built according to the Italian standard UNI 10779 “Fire extinguishing systems – Hydrants networks – design, installation and operation” and according to the Italian standard UNI 11292 “Premises intended to accommodate pumping units for fire-fighting systems – Constructional and functional features”

Three-phase current generators: what they are and how they work

The generation of electricity in the production plants takes place in three-phase for technical reasons: the machines used of this type are in fact simple, functional and reliable.
Another advantage of the system is the transmission and distribution of energy which, in most of the national electricity grid, occur in three phases for both technical and economic reasons.
With the three-phase system it is possible to transport the same amount of electricity using less material and at the same time reducing power transmission losses along the line. The three-phase system is also used because it allows the use of the three-phase asynchronous motor, a machine simple, inexpensive and very reliable, which makes up the majority of engines used in the industry.

A three-phase system is a system of several alternating current circuits, a generator of this type is obtained by connecting three single-phase sinusoidal generators at the same frequency. The system is based on three conductors, that are three cables having the same tension offset by 120°, the three phases are marked by the letters R-S-T (or L1 – L2 – L3). Depending on the configuration, if the three generators share a terminal or, in the opposite case, in a triangle, the neutral cable N can also be present.

In addition to the three-phase current generators, there are also single-phase current generators. Here are the main differences between the two types of circuits. The single-phase circuit is a simpler electrical system, compared to the three-phase circuit, which consists of a single phase, and is made up of one conductor for the neutral and another for the phase. In practice, it is the most common system in homes for powering low-power end users, such as household appliances. In both circuits, which also have the same oscillatory gait, alternating current flows. The only differences between the two plants are the number of phases and the power.

Water and energy: the story of two interdependent resources

Our products exploit water and electricity, two precious resources not only for man but also for energy production. Did you know that water has been used since ancient times to produce mechanical energy with the aim of operating various types of machines and vehicles? An example above all is that of the hydraulic mill whose wheel, which was connected to the mill, turned through specially channeled water. Only after long time, the strenght of the water was used to obtain another type of energy transportable anywhere, that is electricity. How is electricity produced? The power is produced by rotating the magnet in the middle of a wire. The magnetic field by rotating stimulates an electric field is therefore electrical energy. Today dynamo and alternators, thanks also to the power of water, are the main machines able to produce direct or alternating current respectively, indispensable in case of breakdowns, emergencies and working requirements.Check our blog and enjoy reading!

Generators: what are and what are made for

Gen sets are machines made up of a thermal combustion engine which, when coupled to an electric generator, generate continous or alternating electricity independently, in the event of faults or disruptions of the public network. The gen set mainly serves to ensure continuous electrical current not only to companies and offices but also to homes and public facilites, if the conventional network is damaged or absent. They are therefore equipped not only with infrastructures of a certain importance, hospitals or airports but also with construction sites, in order to work independently for the construction of buildings of all kinds, or those who work in the commercial sector for the construction of fairs, stands and events.

How they works

The purpose of generators is to ensure mechanical electrical energy by exploiting magnetic energy thanks to an alternator. They work by taking over the conventional network in an emergency, such as those in hospitals or other public facilities, or in a continuous electricity, such as those used during fairs and events or on construction sites. Their engine can be powered by diesel, petrol or LPG, but there are also innovative models equipped with photovoltaic panels to recharge the batteries or that are remotely managed via the App.

How many types exist?

There are several models of generator sets that are used according to various needs. On the market you can also find silenced gen sets, that are with soundproof generator, specific for public places or outdoor activities.Take a look at our web-site (www.fourgroup.it) where you will find various models of generator sets including the FAST series air cooled open-air generator or the liquid-cooled generator set from the MISTRAL series.
