Fire-fighting pumps: what they are
Types of pumps and use
The most used horizontal-axis fire-fighting pumps are the “end-suction” type, the only vertical-axis pumps allowed are the “vertical turbine pumps”. The use of submerged type main pumps is to be limited.
The fire protection standard UNI EN 12845
All Fourgroup fire-fighting pumps are designed and manufactured according to the UNI EN 12845 standard. This standard describes the characteristics and requirements for the design, installation and maintenance of sprinkler systems in buildings and industries, as well as the type of specific pumps for shutdown. The pumps must be driven by diesel or electric motors. The diesel engine must be direct-initiated, water-cooled or air-cooled and must be able to operate at full load and continuously; it must also be equipped with a tank that ensures operation and good autonomy, based on the risk class of the plants. The Fourgroup fire-fighting systems are designed and built according to the Italian standard UNI 10779 “Fire extinguishing systems – Hydrants networks – design, installation and operation” and according to the Italian standard UNI 11292 “Premises intended to accommodate pumping units for fire-fighting systems – Constructional and functional features”
